After thrashing the Met’s offense the night before, the Phillies
had an early game at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon. They lost the game by a score of 5-4.
Cole Hamels had been on a hot streak, and was taking the
mound against division rival Mets.
Young prospect Zach Wheeler was making his first start against
the Phillies for the New York Mets.
Jimmy Rollins tried to get the hot Phillies offense which scored
13 runs the previous night to a fast start again. He hit a home run to start the game, his 42nd
lead off home run of his career. This
time, no one continued to bring the bats out.
The Mets got to Cole Hamels immediately in the first inning,
scoring three quick runs with RBI singles from Marlon Byrd and Juan Lageras.
After the shaky first inning, the offense came to a halt for
both teams, as the pitchers got into their grooves.
In the fifth inning, the Phillies were able to tack on a second
run off of a sacrifice fly from Chase Utley, scoring Cole Hamels.
The Mets got the run right back in the bottom half of the
inning on a RBI single from the bat of David Wright.
The Mets also added a run
in the seventh inning after an RBI single from Daniel Murphy.
Bobby Parnell of the Mets came in for the save in the top of
the ninth inning. After a base hit from Michael
Young with two outs, Chase Utley bombed a two run home run, his second in as
many days.
After Dominic Brown hit a double for the Phillies third
consecutive hit with two outs, Darin Ruf line out to the second basemen to end
the game.
Mets Reliever Gonzalez Germen earned the win, after Zach
Wheeler failed to go 5 innings due to a high pitch count.
Cole Hamels received the loss and falls to 4-12 on the
season, a very unsatisfying record for the lefty.
Bobby Parnell got his 18th save of the year despite making
things interesting in the ninth
The loss ended a seven game win streak for the Phillies at Citi
Field and send the team right back down to .500 at 49-49. The team will try to
win their fifth series win in a row tomorrow afternoon.
Ace Cliff Lee will take the mound against Matt Harvey in his
first appearance since starting the All Star game.
