Top prospect Asche to get call up, Young trade could be coming

UPDATE: Michael Young will only waive his no-trade clause for a trade back to the Texas Rangers, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal via Twitter.

MLB.com originally reported that sources told them a reunion with the Rangers was not happening, but now it's possible that Texas could be the Phillies' only trade partner.

This is probably the heads up that Michael Young is on his way out of Philadelphia.

Third baseman Cody Asche is getting called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will join the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park for their series against the San Francisco Giants.


Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports first reported that the Phillies were planning on calling up Asche and MLB.com's Todd Zolecki later confirmed that the move is indeed going to happen.

Asche is a top prospect in the Phillies' minor league system. He is hitting .295 with 15 home runs, 68 RBIs and an .837 on-base plus slugging percentage in 104 games with Lehigh Valley this season.

The Phillies picked Asche, 23, in the fourth round of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft, after he played in college for the University of Nebraska.

Micheal Young has been viewed as the most likely Phillie to be traded by Wednesday's 4 p.m. deadline and Asche's call up is a strong implication that he is probably going to be wearing a new uniform in the next couple of days.

Young, 36, is a veteran third baseman that can bring experience and leadership into a team's clubhouse.

He is hitting .277 with seven home runs, 32 RBIs and a .744 OPS in 98 games this season.

Young is in the final year of his contract, which makes him a two-month rental and much easier for the Phillies to move than some other players that are involved in trade speculation.

The Red Sox and Orioles have been mentioned a lot in trade rumors involving Young. A possible reunion with the Texas Rangers has also been tossed around, but the chances of that happening are slim

There's just one problem the Phillies could have trying to trade Young, though. He has a full no-trade clause in his contract and will have to approve of any offer the Phillies try to make.
