The Phillies needed a win and they needed it badly. Their playoff hopes had been all but shattered with the recent eight-game losing streak. But the win was still needed though, to remind everyone that they, as a team, were still breathing. That win came Tuesday night when the Phillies beat the Giants 7-3.
John Lannan took the mound against the reigning world champions. Veteran Barry Zito was taking on the struggling Phillies offense.
The Giants scored right in the first inning when Pablo Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Andres Torres.
The Phillies offense retaliated in the bottom half of the inning. Delmon Young hit an RBI single, scoring Michael Young. A struggling Barry Zito then walked John Mayberry Jr. with the bases loaded to score Chase Utley.
In the third inning, the Giants tied the game on an RBI single by Sandoval.
In the fourth inning, Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz hit a two-run home run, his first home run in a shaky offensive year for the catcher.
In the sixth inning, Michael Young also went yard for two more runs, in what may be his last game as a Phillie.
In the seventh inning, Giants got another run on an RBI single by Joaquin Arias.
The Phillies scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Mayberry, scoring Michael Martinez.
John Lannan picked up the winning moving to 3-4 on the season. Barry Zito continues to struggle on the road, receiving the loss.
The Phillies offense had some life for the first time in a while. Many contributed to the offense, in what could be the last game with the team as we know it.
