Phillies lose to Braves, fall deeper into trouble

The Phillies opened a three game series against division leader Atlanta Braves on Friday night. With a very low probability of a playoff run, the Phillies sat 13.5 games out of first place. The Phillies lost the game 6-4.


Ethan Martin, the minor league call-up, took the mound to start his first career game. Kris Medlen opposed him as the Braves starter.

The first runs of the game were scored in the second inning when Darin Ruf bombed a home run, his third of the season. The next batter Delmon Young also hit a home run, his eighth of the year.

In the third, the Braves scored their first run on an RBI single from outfielder Jason Heyward.

The Braves offense kept rolling in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Justin Upton hit an RBI single to start up the scoring, followed by Home Run by Brian McCann. Chris Johnson then hit a solo shot and Joey Terdoslavich.

The Phillies tried to fight back in the sixth inning with a home run by Chase Utley, his 15th, and an RBI ground-out by Cody Asche, his first career RBI.

The rest of the game was had no scoring, and in the ninth inning Braves closer Craig Kimbrel came to the mound. Kimbrel struck out two en route to his 32nd save of the season.

The win went to Kris Medlen who is 8-10. Ethan Martin loses his first career game and is 0-1

The Phillies have lost 10 out of 11, and are 14.5 games back from the Braves.
