Phillies sign reliever Juan Cruz to minor league deal

January 15, 2013

The Phillies have signed reliever Juan Cruz to a minor league deal according Daniel Seco of MLBTradeRumors.com (via a tweet by CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman).

Cruz, 34, is an 11-year veteran who has pitched 655.0 innings over 447 games with the Cubs, Braves, Athletics, Diamondbacks, Royals, Rays and Pirates. A journeyman to say the least.

In 2012, Cruz posted a 1-1 record with 3 saves and a 2.78 ERA over 35 and 2/3 innings pitched with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He appeared in 43 games until he was designated for assignment in August.

According to Seco, Cruz refused to pitch in the minors, which led to him being released by Pittsburgh.

Cruz has also received an invitation to Spring Training from the Phillies.
