With the Phillies now 17 games back of first in the National League East, there really isn't much left to get excited about this season.
Granted, it would have been a lot more exciting if the Phillies were still in contention for October, but it looks like Roy Halladay is close to coming back.
Halladay, who has been out since a disaster of a start on May 5 against the Miami Marlins, will be heading to Clearwater to officially begin his journey back into the Phillies' rotation.
Halladay will have a simulated start in Clearwater on Saturday, after throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press' Dan Gelston (via Twitter).
A two-time Cy Young Award winner and a good example of an ace pitcher, Halladay has struggled early in the season with a 2-4 record and an 8.65 ERA in seven starts. It all culminated with that downright terrible start against the Marlins, when he gave up nine earned runs in two and a third innings pitched.
After that, it was revealed that Hallday had a bone spur in his shoulder, which caused fraying in his labrum and a partially torn rotator cuff that would take surgery to repair.
A successful surgery and a few bullpen sessions later and Halladay is finally ready to start making his way back to the mound.
Halladay is in the final year of his contract, so how he pitches when he does rejoin the Phillies could determine his future with the team.
Although this team has fell into a tailspin in the second half of the season, Halladay would lie to stay with the Phillies, according to Gelston.
