Phils rout Cubs, win series

On Thursday afternoon, the Phillies won there first series since the All-Star break. Lighting up the scoreboard and the Cubs, to win 12-1.



In today's game, many a young Phillie made his mark. Darin Ruf, Cody Asche and Ethan Martin all performed very well in earning the Phillies the win.

Ethan Martin was making his second career start, his first being very unsatisfying.  Jeff Samardzija was on the mound for the Cubs.

All of the offense started in the second inning, when the Phillies jumped up 2-0 with RBI singles from both John Mayberry Jr. and Michael Martinez.

In the third inning the scoring continued when Darin Ruf smacked his fifth home run over the fence, scoring Chase Utley.

The next run scored was the only run the Cubs would score on Thursday afternoon, on a solo shot from Nate Schierholtz in the fourth inning.

The rest of the game was all Phillies offense.

The team scored six runs in the fourth inning alone. First, Carlos Ruiz bunted in an RBI with a single. Soon after, Chase Utley hit a double, scoring Kevin Frandsen.

Dominic Brown then batted in his team leading 73rd and 74th RBIs with a single, clearing the bases.

Rookie Cody Asche then went yard for the first time in his career, scoring both Brown and himself to give the Phillies a 10-1 lead.

The Phillies scored one more time after a short rain delay in the seventh inning, on a two run shot by John McDonald in the eighth inning

Ethan Martin earned his first major league win, going five innings and giving up only one run, moving to 1-1 on the season. Samardzija suffered the loss and is 6-11 on the year.

With the win, the Phillies snap their series losing streak. They'll be heading down to Washington to face the rival Nationals for the weekend series.
