Ruiz skips rehab assignment, activated by Phillies

Carlos Ruiz will skip the rehab assignment entirely, heading right back to the Phillies instead.

Ruiz, who was on the DL since May 19 with a strained right hamstring, has been activated by the team and will skip the originally scheduled rehab appearance for Double-A Reading.

To make room for Ruiz, the Phillies sent catcher Steven Lerud back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruiz missed 25 games before going on the DL due to a suspension for violating Major League Baseball's substance policy.

Ruiz played 16 games when he returned from the suspension, hitting .235 with a .286 on-base percentage.

With backup catcher Erik Kratz out 6-8 weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee, the Phillies have had to rely on Humberto Quintero and Steven Lerud to take over behind the plate.

Having Ruiz back will help make the catching situation at least a little better.
